Deplatforming
ModerationDefinition
Deplatforming is the removal, banning, or suspension of a user, group, or community from a communication platform, typically in response to violations of that platform's rules against conduct such as hate speech, harassment, or incitement. It can involve a single platform ejecting an account or coordinated action across multiple services and infrastructure providers (payment processors, hosting companies, app stores) to deny a banned actor the means to operate online. Proponents view it as a way to limit the reach and harm of bad actors; critics raise concerns about consistency, transparency, and free-expression trade-offs.
On Reddit, deplatforming most often takes the form of banning entire subreddits and their associated user networks, as the company did with communities tied to harassment, hate, or coordinated abuse. Academic research on deplatforming's effects is mixed: some studies find that removing hate organizations or high-profile norm-violators reduces the production and consumption of toxic content and overall attention toward them, while other studies find that deplatformed users migrate to less-moderated "fringe" platforms where they may become more isolated or radicalized. There is not yet a clear scholarly consensus, which is part of why deplatforming remains a contested moderation tool.
