Megathread
ModerationDefinition
A megathread is a single large discussion thread that consolidates conversation about one topic or event into one place. Rather than allowing many separate posts on the same subject, a community channels all related comments, questions, and updates into the megathread, which is typically created by a moderator and pinned ("stickied") to the top of the subreddit so it stays visible regardless of its vote score. Megathreads are most common during high-traffic moments—breaking news, sporting events, product launches, live broadcasts, or ongoing crises—where activity would otherwise overwhelm a community with duplicate submissions.
On Reddit, megathreads are a key moderation tool for managing surges in activity and maintaining order. By directing everyone to a single designated thread, moderators prevent the front page of a subreddit from being flooded with redundant or low-effort posts about the same story, and they can concentrate their oversight—removing rule-breaking content, posting verified updates, and curating top comments—in one location instead of policing dozens of scattered threads. Megathreads also shape the user experience: they enable fast-moving, real-time discussion during live events, but critics note they can bury individual voices and slow the organic, vote-driven surfacing of new angles. Their use is especially prominent in news, gaming, and sports communities.
