Moderator Code of Conduct
ModerationDefinition
The Moderator Code of Conduct is Reddit's official, moderator-specific rulebook, rolled out in 2022 and layered on top of the sitewide Content Policy, setting clear expectations for how moderation teams run their communities. It is organised into numbered rules covering matters such as creating and maintaining a stable, accessible community, respecting other communities by not directing or coordinating interference, and not creating, approving or encouraging rule-breaking content.
The Code matters because it formalises the relationship between Reddit and its volunteer moderators, giving the company an explicit basis on which to intervene in how communities are governed. Its provisions on keeping communities stable and accessible were cited by Reddit during the 2023 protest as justification for acting against subreddits that were kept dark or tagged NSFW, illustrating how a code framed as best-practice guidance can also function as an enforcement tool. Each rule has its own dedicated help article, and breaches can lead Reddit to warn or remove moderation teams.
