Removal Reason
ModerationDefinition
A removal reason is the explanation a moderator attaches when taking down a post or comment, telling the affected user which rule was broken and, often, how to fix or appeal the action. Reddit lets communities save a library of standard removal reasons so the same clear, consistent message can be applied with one click, sometimes posted as a reply and sometimes sent privately.
Removal reasons matter because they are the main mechanism of transparency in routine moderation. Content can be removed silently, which leaves users confused and breeds suspicion that moderation is arbitrary or biased; a stated removal reason converts an opaque deletion into a teachable, contestable decision. The feature ties directly into appeals and modmail, since a documented reason gives the user something concrete to respond to. Communities that use removal reasons well tend to face fewer disputes, while their absence is a common source of complaints about hidden or unaccountable moderation.
