User Agreement / Terms of Service
LegalDefinition
Reddit's User Agreement, sometimes called its Terms of Service, is the binding legal contract that governs access to and use of Reddit's websites, mobile apps, APIs, and related products and services. By accessing or using Reddit, users agree to be bound by these terms; those who do not agree may not use the services. The agreement sets out core conditions such as a minimum age of 13 to create an account, a requirement to comply with applicable laws, and incorporation of the Content Policy, which contains Reddit's rules on prohibited content and conduct. It grants users a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use the platform while Reddit reserves all other rights.
On Reddit, the User Agreement matters because it defines the relationship between the company, its users, volunteer moderators, and the content they post, and it underpins enforcement actions such as suspensions and content removals. The terms also address liability, dispute resolution, and content licensing, and they have drawn regulatory attention; for example, California's content-moderation transparency law (AB 587) required Reddit to file public reports describing its terms of service and moderation practices. The agreement is periodically updated, and continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
