What happened
In September 2023, Reddit launched its Contributor Program, the first system to let everyday Redditors and moderators convert on-platform recognition into real-world money. The program was built atop a revamped gold economy: users could award gold to posts and comments they liked, in denominations ranging from $1.99 up to $49, and eligible recipients could cash that gold out. Standard 'contributors' earned about 90 cents per gold (requiring at least 10 gold and 200–4,999 karma over a 12-month window), while 'top contributors' with over 5,000 karma earned roughly a dollar per gold.
Initially limited to users in the United States, the program required participants to verify their identity and banking details through a one-time flow powered by Persona and Stripe before receiving payouts. The launch marked a significant strategic shift for Reddit, which had historically run on the unpaid labor of enthusiasts and volunteer moderators. By introducing direct creator monetization, Reddit moved toward the creator-economy models of platforms like YouTube and TikTok — an effort to retain top contributors and incentivize quality content as the company prepared for its 2024 public listing.
