Biography
Paul Graham is a British-born computer programmer, essayist, and investor who co-founded the startup accelerator Y Combinator in 2005 alongside Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris, and Trevor Blackwell. Before Y Combinator, Graham co-created Viaweb, an early web-based e-commerce platform that Yahoo! acquired in 1998. He is also widely read for his essays on programming, startups, and entrepreneurship.
Graham played a direct role in Reddit's origin. When Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian applied to Y Combinator's first 2005 batch, they pitched a different idea; Graham steered them toward building what became Reddit, which launched in June 2005. Y Combinator's seed funding and mentorship were instrumental in getting the site off the ground before its 2006 sale to Condé Nast. Graham has frequently cited Reddit as an example in his writing about how startups evolve from their initial concepts.
Through Y Combinator, Graham helped seed a generation of widely used technology companies, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, and Twitch. The accelerator's model — small standardized investments in large batches of early-stage founders — became influential across the venture-capital industry, and Reddit is regularly listed among its earliest notable successes.
Graham stepped back from day-to-day leadership of Y Combinator in the mid-2010s, with Sam Altman and later Michael Seibel taking on operating roles. He has remained an active essayist and a frequently referenced voice in debates about startup culture and Silicon Valley. His connection to Reddit is most often discussed in the context of the company's founding story and the broader history of Y Combinator, rather than any direct operational role at the company itself.
