Biography
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., known professionally as Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper and entrepreneur who participated as an early investor in Reddit. He took part in Reddit's 2014 Series B financing, a round of roughly fifty million dollars that valued the company at about five hundred million dollars and was led by Sam Altman, then president of Y Combinator.
Snoop Dogg's involvement was notable because he was already a well-known presence on Reddit, having taken part in the site's popular 'Ask Me Anything' question-and-answer sessions. Altman, in 2014 comments to the press, described Snoop as a kind of Reddit celebrity and said the company had assembled a wish list of desired investors on which Snoop ranked highly. The Series B group also included prominent technology investors such as Marc Andreessen and Peter Thiel.
In the years that followed, Reddit's valuation rose substantially, reaching about ten billion dollars by the time of its March 2024 initial public offering. Co-founder Alexis Ohanian has publicly thanked Snoop Dogg for being one of the company's earliest backers, noting that relatively few investors were willing to put money into Reddit at that stage. The investment has frequently been cited in business and entertainment coverage as an example of a celebrity's early-stage technology bet.
Snoop Dogg's stake is generally discussed as part of Reddit's investor history rather than as an operational role; he was not involved in running the company. His participation illustrates the eclectic group of backers Reddit attracted in its mid-2010s funding rounds, blending traditional venture capital with high-profile individual investors. Reporting on the investment has emphasized its symbolic and financial significance, particularly in the context of Reddit's later public-market success, while noting that precise figures on any individual's holdings are not always disclosed.
