Summary
FOSTA-SESTA amended Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to strip platform immunity for knowingly facilitating sex trafficking, exposing online platforms to federal and state liability. In direct response to the bill's passage through Congress in March 2018, Reddit updated its content policy and banned several long-running communities, including the Escorts, Male Escorts, Hookers, and SugarDaddy subreddits, citing its policy against prohibited transactions. The bans occurred within hours of the Senate vote, before the law was formally signed. The statute remains controversial for its chilling effect on lawful online speech by sex workers. It is one of the clearest cases of a US law reshaping Reddit's moderation overnight.
