Story arc · 2010–2023
Reddit was built by volunteers using free tools. In 2023 it priced the tools out of existence and broke the volunteers' revolt.
For over a decade, third-party apps and free API access were how Reddit's unpaid moderators actually ran the site — and how blind users could access it at all.
The 2023 API pricing change killed those apps in a single stroke, triggered the largest coordinated protest in the site's history, and ended with Reddit forcibly reopening communities and removing the moderators who resisted. The volunteers lost; the IPO followed.
