Admin (Reddit Admin)
RolesDefinition
An admin (administrator) is an employee of Reddit, Inc. who is responsible for the platform as a whole, in contrast to moderators, who are unpaid volunteers responsible only for individual communities. Admins maintain the site's infrastructure, develop features, set and enforce the platform-wide Reddit Rules and Content Policy, and handle issues that exceed the scope of any single subreddit. Crucially, only admins can suspend or ban accounts from Reddit entirely; moderators can remove content within their communities but cannot delete it from the site or ban a user platform-wide.
On Reddit, the admin-versus-moderator distinction is important for understanding who holds what power. Moderators run their communities largely as they choose, provided they follow the Reddit Rules and Moderator Code of Conduct, while admins oversee sitewide enforcement, trust and safety, and policy. Admins often interact with users through official Reddit and admin team accounts and through communities like r/help and r/ModSupport. The relationship between admins and moderators has at times been contentious, notably during the 2023 API protests, when company decisions made by admins directly affected the volunteer moderators who keep communities running.
