Ban Evasion Filter
ModerationDefinition
The ban evasion filter is an optional community safety setting that automatically diverts posts and comments from accounts suspected of evading a prior ban from that same community. Reddit detects likely evasion using account signals related to how a user connects to the platform and information shared with it, and moderators can tune how aggressively the filter acts by adjusting the confidence level and the time window it considers.
The tool addresses a structural weakness of pseudonymous platforms: banning an account is only as effective as the platform's ability to stop the same person returning under a new name. By surfacing suspected returns for review, the filter helps communities make their bans stick without manually playing whack-a-mole. It matters because it operationalises the broader sitewide rule against ban evasion at the community level, and because, like other signal-based filters, it carries a false-positive risk, shared networks or devices can make innocent users look like evaders, which is why it filters for review rather than blocking outright.
