Concern Trolling
CultureDefinition
Concern trolling is a manipulation tactic in which someone who actually opposes a group or position pretends to be a sympathetic supporter raising worries "for the good" of that side. By framing criticism as friendly concern, the concern troll hopes to sow doubt, lower morale or steer a community toward weaker choices, while being harder to dismiss than an open opponent.
The behaviour is common in the political and identity-focused discussions that fill many Reddit communities, where it is corrosive precisely because it disguises itself as constructive feedback. Like sealioning, it weaponises the norms of civil debate, making it difficult for moderators to act, since the comments are superficially polite and on-topic. Naming concern trolling matters for governance because it helps communities and moderators distinguish genuine internal critique from bad-faith infiltration, and it illustrates why harassment and manipulation rules increasingly focus on intent and pattern rather than only on overtly abusive wording.
