Contributor Program
BusinessDefinition
The Contributor Program is Reddit's official scheme that lets eligible users earn real money based on the engagement their posts and comments receive. Other redditors spend gold to give awards, and contributors earn a cash share tied to the amount of gold awarded to their content and to the karma they accumulate, with higher activity placing them in higher earning tiers. Earnings above a threshold can be redeemed as cash through a payout provider.
The program matters because it changes the incentive structure of the platform. Reddit's culture was historically built on karma as a non-monetary point system, so attaching real money to popular content introduces new motives, and new risks: stronger incentives to farm karma, repost, manipulate votes or chase engagement bait, all behaviours the platform's integrity rules try to suppress. The Contributor Program is thus a useful lens on how Reddit's move toward monetisation and its 2024 transition to a public company interact with the governance challenge of keeping content authentic.
