Crowd Control
ModerationDefinition
Crowd Control is a Reddit safety setting that lets moderators automatically collapse or filter contributions from users who are not yet trusted members of their community. Rather than removing content outright, it de-emphasises comments and can filter posts from accounts that are new, have negative karma in that community, or are not subscribers, with selectable strictness levels.
The tool is designed for moments when a community is exposed to a surge of unfamiliar visitors, such as a post going viral or being linked from elsewhere, or when bad-faith outsiders are engaging. By collapsing low-trust comments by default, Crowd Control reduces the visibility of likely disruption without a moderator having to act on each item individually, and the setting applies consistently across old Reddit, the website and the official apps. It matters as an example of automated, reputation-based moderation that scales: it shifts the burden from after-the-fact removal toward dampening the reach of risky content in the first place.
