Flair
TechnicalDefinition
Flair is a small tag or label that Reddit attaches to posts and users to add context and aid organization within a community. It comes in two main forms. Post flair is a category label applied to a submission—such as "Question," "Discussion," "News," or "Spoiler"—that helps sort content and lets readers filter a subreddit by topic. User flair is a badge displayed next to a person's username inside a particular community, which can indicate a role, affiliation, expertise, or simply a personal touch. Flair is configured by each subreddit's moderators, so its appearance, options, and rules vary widely from one community to the next.
On Reddit, flair is an important moderation and culture tool. Mandatory post flair lets moderators keep large, busy subreddits navigable by forcing submissions into clear categories and enabling automated rules—for example, requiring a flair before a post is approved or routing flaired posts to specific filters. User flair can establish credibility (a verified "Lawyer" or "Software Engineer" badge in an advice subreddit), signal team or fan allegiances in sports and hobby communities, or denote trusted contributors. Some flair is self-assigned, while other flair requires moderator approval or verification, making it both a fun expressive feature and a meaningful marker of identity and trust on the platform.
