Mod Notes
ModerationDefinition
Mod Notes is Reddit's native, first-party moderator feature, launched around 2022, that lets moderators attach context to individual community members. A moderator can record a free-text note plus one of several preset labels marked with a flag icon to denote concerning or positive behaviour, and can optionally link the note to a specific post or comment. The feature is distinct from the older third-party "usernotes" provided by the Moderator Toolbox extension.
Mod Notes matters because it brings a previously community-built capability into Reddit's official product, giving moderation teams a shared, persistent memory of their prior interactions with a user without relying on outside tools. Adding notes requires the user-management moderator permission, and notes are paired with a per-user mod log of actions taken against that member. The feature works on the desktop site and Reddit's native mobile apps but not on old Reddit, and a dedicated API endpoint lets teams manage notes programmatically. It reflects Reddit's broader post-2023 effort to replace lost third-party tooling with native equivalents.
