Modmail
ModerationDefinition
Modmail is Reddit's built-in messaging system for communication between users and a subreddit's moderation team. Instead of writing to an individual moderator, a user sends a message to a shared inbox that all the community's moderators can see and respond to, keeping conversations in one place. Reddit's modern "new modmail" organises these threads into folders such as new, in progress and archived.
Modmail is the primary official channel for handling questions, appeals and disputes at the community level: it is where users contest a removed post, ask why they were banned, or flag a problem, and where moderators coordinate a collective reply. It matters to platform governance because it is the documented, auditable interface between a community's leadership and its members, distinct from sitewide admin contact. Its design, shared visibility and folder workflow, reflects the reality that moderation is a team activity, and the quality of a community is often judged by how responsive and fair its modmail handling is.
