NCII (Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery)
LegalDefinition
NCII stands for non-consensual intimate imagery: sexually explicit or intimate images or videos of a person that are created, shared, or threatened to be shared without that person's consent. It is also referred to as image-based sexual abuse. The category is broader than the older, criticized term "revenge porn"; it includes images originally created consensually but later shared without permission, images captured covertly, and AI-generated or manipulated depictions (deepfakes) that place a real person into intimate content they never participated in. Advocacy organizations such as the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative note that women are disproportionately targeted.
On Reddit, NCII is prohibited under the sitewide policy banning the sharing of non-consensual intimate media, and the company removes such content and bans offending accounts. Reddit has at times hosted controversial communities that trafficked in such material before policy enforcement caught up, contributing to broader debates about platform responsibility. In the United States, the 2025 federal Take It Down Act now requires covered platforms to remove reported NCII, including digital forgeries, within 48 hours, and many U.S. states criminalize its distribution. Victims can seek removal assistance through services such as StopNCII.org and the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative.
