The technique matters because it turns Reddit's hard-won credibility into a vehicle for spam: operators buy aged, high-karma accounts and use automated tools to plant product mentions, fabricated recommendations or AI-generated text into threads that already rank, so that the manipulated content surfaces to searchers and increasingly to AI systems that draw on search results. Google formalised a policy against site reputation abuse in 2024 and has publicly defended its enforcement as anti-spam work, while Reddit treats such manipulation as prohibited spam and content manipulation.
