Ragebait / Engagement Bait
CultureDefinition
Ragebait is content created or framed specifically to provoke anger, outrage or indignation so that people will react to it, an aggressive subset of "engagement bait," which is any content designed primarily to trigger likes, comments, shares or, on Reddit, votes and replies, rather than to inform or entertain. The aim is to game distribution systems that reward interaction.
This matters on Reddit because the platform's ranking surfaces content that draws activity, and few things drive comments faster than a post that makes people want to argue. A deliberately infuriating headline, a bad-faith hot take or a misleading framing can ride a wave of angry replies to the top of a subreddit or r/all, where outrage often outcompetes accuracy. Ragebait is a core concern in content-manipulation and quality debates: it shows how engagement-maximising design can be exploited to amplify divisive or false material, and it connects to broader worries about doomscrolling, polarisation and the incentives facing both users and the platform.
