Reddit Hug of Death
TechnicalDefinition
The "Reddit hug of death" is the sudden, overwhelming surge of traffic that hits a website after a link to it reaches a large Reddit audience, often crashing the server or making the page unreachable. The name is affectionate, the attention is well-meant, but the volume can be more than a small site is built to handle. It is a specific case of the older "Slashdot effect," the phenomenon of a site going down after being featured on a popular aggregator.
The term matters because it captures the raw distributive power of Reddit's front page and r/all. A single post that climbs the rankings can send enough visitors to take down personal blogs, indie projects or under-provisioned services within minutes. That power has practical consequences, creators sometimes mirror content or use caching in anticipation, and it underlines why control over what gets promoted is consequential: the platform does not just shape opinion, it can redirect a measurable share of internet traffic at a moment's notice.
