Reddit Predictions
TechnicalDefinition
Reddit Predictions was an interactive posting format, launched on 13 October 2021, that let moderators create "prediction tournaments" of timely questions, such as sports results or awards-show outcomes, which community members could play along with. It was Reddit's first new posting format in nearly two years and grew out of the platform's earlier Polls feature, turning a simple poll into a light competitive game with leaderboards.
Each participant received one thousand free virtual tokens and wagered between ten and one hundred of them per question; correct guesses earned more tokens and a higher leaderboard standing. Reddit was explicit that the tokens had no monetary value and were not part of any monetisation plan, distinguishing the feature from its blockchain-based Community Points. Predictions rolled out to safe-for-work communities of at least ten thousand members after a year of testing that drew more than a million participants across tournaments on communities such as r/movies and r/formula1. The feature matters as one of Reddit's many experiments in driving engagement through gamification, and as an example of the steady churn of secondary features the platform launches and, in several cases, later retires.
