The gag is generally traced to a 2011 comment thread and is curated by a dedicated community that documents and verifies notable links in the chain, which has at times stretched through thousands of entries. It matters as an illustration of how Reddit's persistent, permalinked comment structure enables emergent, collaborative in-jokes that are native to the platform's architecture, since each comment can be linked individually and revisited years later.
