Reddit Talk
BusinessDefinition
Reddit Talk was a live audio feature, launched in April 2021, that let users host real-time spoken conversations within a community, Reddit's answer to the social-audio boom led by Clubhouse. It allowed a host to speak to a listening audience inside a subreddit, with the usual moderation roles applied to the room. Reddit announced its shutdown in 2023, less than two years after launch, citing the loss of a third-party audio vendor and the resources required to keep it running.
Reddit Talk matters mainly as a case study in platform strategy and the governance of ephemeral, hard-to-moderate formats. Live audio poses distinctive safety challenges, abuse leaves no easily reviewable text record, and Reddit's quick exit reflected both the fading of the social-audio trend and the difficulty of sustaining such a product. Together with RPAN's closure, it documents how Reddit's experimental surfaces came and went, shaping where the platform's content-policy and moderation efforts were actually deployed.
