Sitewide Ban / Account Suspension
ModerationDefinition
A sitewide ban, also called an account suspension, is an enforcement action taken by Reddit (its administrators) against an entire account for violating the platform-wide Reddit Rules or Content Policy. Unlike a subreddit ban, which only removes a user from a single community and is imposed by volunteer moderators, a sitewide ban is imposed by Reddit employees and applies across the whole platform. Suspensions can be temporary or permanent, and while suspended a user loses the ability to vote, post, comment, send chats, report content, create communities, or edit posts and wiki pages.
Reddit notifies suspended users through their inbox, explaining which rule was violated, the action taken, and how to appeal. Common reasons include spam, vote manipulation, harassment, inauthentic activity, and ban evasion (creating new accounts to circumvent a prior ban). Users who believe a ban was a mistake can file an appeal within six months of receiving it, following the instructions in the notification, after which Reddit reviews the case again. Because only admins can ban accounts sitewide, this represents the platform's most severe individual enforcement tool, distinct from the day-to-day moderation handled within individual communities.
