Vote Fuzzing
TechnicalDefinition
Vote fuzzing is Reddit's practice of deliberately obscuring the exact upvote and downvote tallies on posts and comments. The displayed counts are randomised slightly and can shift between page refreshes, so the numbers a viewer sees are an approximation rather than a precise record of every vote cast. The overall score remains roughly accurate while the individual tallies are masked.
The purpose is anti-abuse. If vote totals were exact and reliable, operators of voting bots or coordinated brigades could watch the numbers to confirm their manipulation was working and tune their tactics accordingly. By adding noise, Reddit denies them that feedback loop, making large-scale vote manipulation harder to verify and therefore harder to run. Vote fuzzing matters because it is a built-in, automatic defence layered on top of detection systems, and it explains why users sometimes see inconsistent or impossible-looking vote counts that are not bugs but a feature of the integrity design.
