What happened
On February 17, 2024, the European Union's Digital Services Act became applicable to all online intermediary services, including Reddit, extending beyond the initial set of designated very large online platforms. The rules require in-scope providers to publish content-moderation transparency reporting, designate a point of contact for EU users and authorities, offer mechanisms to report illegal content, and prioritize reports from trusted flaggers.
To meet these obligations, Reddit subsequently published DSA transparency information, including its average monthly active recipients in the EU and details of its content-moderation practices. The date marked the point at which a broad swathe of platforms, not just the largest ones, fell under the EU's harmonized online-content rules, making DSA compliance a standing operational requirement for Reddit's European operations.
