What happened
In February 2011, Reddit announced it had crossed one billion page views in a single month, a milestone the company noted placed it among only about 100 sites on the entire internet at that level of traffic. The figure represented a 21 percent jump from the 829 million views recorded in December 2010, which itself capped a year of explosive growth from just 250 million page views in January 2010.
The achievement marked Reddit's transition from a niche link-aggregation site into a genuine mass-audience platform. It came shortly before the 2011 recapitalization that spun Reddit out as an independent subsidiary, and the surging traffic gave the newly restructured company a stronger footing as it sought investors and built out its own team. The billion-pageview threshold became a frequently cited proof point of Reddit's momentum and helped justify the platform's growing ambitions to monetize and expand beyond its tech-heavy early user base.
