What happened
In late November 2016, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman (known on the site as u/spez) admitted he had used his administrative powers to secretly alter user comments. After members of the pro-Trump community r/The_Donald flooded threads with posts reading 'fuck u/spez,' Huffman quietly edited the offending text for about an hour to instead attribute the insults to r/The_Donald's own moderators. The episode came amid heavy harassment directed at Huffman following Reddit's ban of the r/pizzagate community.
Huffman confirmed the edits on November 23, 2016, conceding he had overstepped: 'As the CEO, I shouldn't play such games, and it's all fixed now.' The incident drew intense criticism because it exposed that any administrator could silently change what users had written, raising trust and integrity concerns at the heart of a platform built on open discussion. It became one of the defining controversies of Huffman's tenure and a recurring reference point in debates over Reddit's leadership and moderation power.
