ChatGPT's Reddit Citations Collapse in August 2026, Promptwatch Data Shows

According to a data report published by AI-visibility vendor Promptwatch on August 18, 2026, Reddit's share of citations in OpenAI's ChatGPT Search fell from an average of 3.83% between July 18 and August 7 to just 0.52% between August 14 and August 17 — a relative drop of 86.4%. Promptwatch said the figures were drawn from 'over 26 billion analyzed citations, prompts, and responses,' with the caveat that 'only responses with at least one citation contribute to the calculation.' Search Engine Journal reported the same before-and-after percentages in its coverage of the report.

Promptwatch traced the shift to August 8, when fanout queries — the sub-searches ChatGPT runs to assemble an answer — that used the 'site:' operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of all fanout queries, a roughly 46-fold increase, while the average number of searches per response rose from 1.08 to 1.83. Search Engine Journal reported that Promptwatch's Klaas Foppen, writing in the company's separate site: operator report, said ChatGPT 'is no longer just searching the open web and seeing what comes back; it is deliberately going to specific sites to pull information from them.' Over the same window, Promptwatch's own data showed Google's AI Overviews citation share for Reddit slipping only gradually, from 2.37% to 2.10% (down 11.3%), and Google's AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54% (down 30.5%) — declines Promptwatch treated as gradual rather than the cliff seen in ChatGPT.

Search Engine Journal's Matt G. Southern cautioned that the August 8 change alone did not fully account for what followed: he noted it produced only a modest slide at first, while the sharper drop arrived six days later, concluding that 'this change alone does not explain the sharper decline.' Promptwatch itself flagged uncertainty about the cause, writing that 'a shift in ChatGPT's source selection is the obvious candidate, but a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional while we keep monitoring.'

Gizmodo's AJ Dellinger described the same trend using different figures, reporting that 'up until August 8, Reddit regularly appeared in responses generated by ChatGPT, showing up in as many as 4.5% of all outputs' and that it 'now is cited in about 0.5% of all responses' — numbers close to Promptwatch's post-drop 0.52% but higher than Promptwatch's pre-drop 3.83% average, a discrepancy that was not reconciled between the two outlets. Gizmodo said it contacted OpenAI for comment and did not receive a response by publication; Search Engine Journal reported that Gizmodo's request went unanswered, without describing outreach of its own.
