Ager Hasan's Reddit Murder Confession (Melinda Vasilije Killing)
2017–2023
Days after fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend Melinda Vasilije in Kitchener, Ontario, Ager Hasan posted an account of the killing to Reddit while a fugitive; he was arrested in Texas, extradited, and convicted of second-degree murder in 2023.
What happened
In late April 2017, 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije, a hairstylist, was found stabbed to death in her apartment in Kitchener, Ontario. Police identified her former boyfriend, Ager Hasan, then 24, of Hamilton, Ontario, as the suspect. Investigators said Hasan crossed the border into the United States within hours of the killing, and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder.
On May 2, 2017, a post appeared on Reddit, written under the username 'Redasblue101,' in which the author claimed to be Hasan and presented a first-person account of the night Vasilije died. The post included photographs of Hasan and Vasilije and screenshots of text messages, and framed the killing as the outcome of a confrontation. News organizations including BuzzFeed News and Vice reported on the post while cautioning that its authorship could not be independently confirmed at the time. Such posts are reported here as claims; the authoritative account of what happened is the one later established at trial.
Reddit removed the post and suspended the account associated with it. The episode drew significant attention as an example of a wanted suspect appearing to use a major social platform to broadcast a self-serving narrative while a fugitive, raising questions about how platforms handle apparent confessions and potential evidence in active investigations.
Hasan was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on July 11, 2017. After extradition proceedings, a Texas judge ordered his return to Canada, and he was extradited under police escort in early January 2018 to face the murder charge in Ontario.
The case proceeded to trial in Ontario. In May 2023, a jury convicted Hasan of second-degree murder in Vasilije's death; evidence at trial established that she had been stabbed dozens of times, and he had unsuccessfully sought to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. As reported by CBC, he received a life sentence, and the court set his period of parole ineligibility such that he would not be eligible to apply for parole until 2033.
The killing of Melinda Vasilije was a case of fatal intimate-partner violence, and coverage has emphasized the loss to her family and community. The Reddit dimension is a notable but secondary feature of the case; the central facts are a young woman's murder and the eventual conviction of her former partner after he fled the country and was returned to face justice.
Impact
A 22-year-old woman was killed in an act of intimate-partner violence, and her former boyfriend fled to the United States before being captured, extradited, and ultimately convicted. In May 2023 a jury found Ager Hasan guilty of second-degree murder; he was sentenced to life with no eligibility to apply for parole until 2033. The case also became a widely cited example of a fugitive using a social platform to publish an apparent confession, prompting Reddit to remove the content.
