Ager Hasan's Reddit Murder Confession (Melinda Vasilije Killing)
2017–2023
Days after fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend Melinda Vasilije in Kitchener, Ontario, Ager Hasan posted an account of the killing to Reddit while a fugitive; he was arrested in Texas, extradited, and convicted of second-degree murder in 2023.
What happened
Melinda Vasilije, a 22-year-old hairstylist, was found stabbed to death in her Kitchener, Ontario apartment in late April 2017. Her ex-boyfriend, Ager Hasan, fled across the U.S. border within hours. On May 2, 2017, a Reddit account posted a first-person account claiming to be Hasan, describing the night of the killing — including photographs and screenshots of text messages — and casting the death as the outcome of a violent struggle. Reddit removed the post and suspended the account, and police publicly confirmed they were investigating the post while Hasan remained at large.
Hasan was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on July 11, 2017, and was extradited to Canada in January 2018. The Reddit post is a documented part of the public record of the case: it surfaced while Hasan was a fugitive, was widely reported by outlets such as BuzzFeed News and Vice, and helped publicize the manhunt.
In May 2023, a jury found Hasan guilty of second-degree murder; evidence at trial established that Vasilije had been stabbed dozens of times. He had attempted to plead guilty to manslaughter, but the Crown rejected that plea. At sentencing, the court set parole ineligibility such that he cannot apply for parole until 2033.
Impact
A real homicide in which the perpetrator's Reddit post about the killing became a publicized part of the case during the manhunt, illustrating how self-incriminating social-media activity intersects with criminal investigations. Hasan was convicted of second-degree murder in 2023 with parole ineligibility to 2033.
