Reddit Bans r/MillionDollarExtreme (MDE) (September 2018)

Million Dollar Extreme (MDE) was a sketch-comedy troupe fronted by Sam Hyde, alongside collaborators Nick Rochefort and Charls Carroll, that built a following on YouTube before crossing into mainstream television. The group's reputation was defined by deliberately provocative, ironic content, and Hyde personally became one of the most recognizable figures associated with the mid-2010s 'alt-right' online culture. According to BuzzFeed News reporting by Joseph Bernstein, sources at Adult Swim's standards department repeatedly discovered and removed coded racial messages, including swastikas, embedded in the original cuts of the troupe's work.

MDE's highest-profile venture was the Adult Swim series 'Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace,' an avant-garde sketch program that premiered on August 5, 2016. The show was controversial from the start and was canceled on December 5, 2016 after a single six-episode season amid alt-right controversy; comedian Brett Gelman publicly cited the show as a reason he severed ties with Adult Swim. By 2018 the subreddit had roughly 43,000 subscribers and had become a hub for white-supremacist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, and antisemitic content.

The deplatforming accelerated in 2018: on May 4, 2018, MDE's main YouTube channel was permanently removed for violating the platform's community guidelines, cutting off the group's largest distribution channel and intensifying scrutiny of its remaining Reddit presence.

On September 10, 2018, Reddit permanently banned r/MillionDollarExtreme for 'violating our violent content rules,' invoking the incitement-to-violence prohibition added in Reddit's October 2017 policy update. The ban was not limited to the flagship community; Reddit simultaneously removed the backup subreddit r/milliondollarextreme2 and the related r/billionshekelsupreme, a name that itself trafficked in antisemitic referencing. BuzzFeed News framed the action as a meaningful but narrow enforcement step, criticizing the invocation of only the violent-content rule when the community's core problem was sustained white-supremacist content.

The timing drew commentary because the MDE removal came just two days before Reddit banned its main QAnon conspiracy forum, r/GreatAwakening, on September 12, 2018, prompting observers such as the blog We Hunted The Mammoth to characterize September 2018 as a brief, concentrated wave of enforcement against far-right and conspiratorial communities. Reporting around the period also revisited Hyde's documented financial ties to the white-supremacist movement, including a reported $5,000 donation to the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer. Separately, Sam Hyde's name is recurrently spread by fans as a false suspect after mass shootings, an online harassment and disinformation pattern tied to the broader fanbase.
