Reddit removes accounts tied to Iran's Liberty Front Press operation
August 2018
In August 2018 Reddit removed roughly 143 accounts linked to an Iran-aligned inauthentic news network exposed as 'Liberty Front Press,' which had seeded Iran-friendly content into political subreddits.
What happened
In August 2018, the cybersecurity firm FireEye publicly exposed a sprawling influence operation it attributed to actors aligned with Iran, centered on a network of inauthentic news outlets that included a property branded 'Liberty Front Press.' The operation pushed content sympathetic to Iranian state interests across multiple social platforms, masquerading as independent journalism and grassroots commentary. In the wake of that disclosure, Reddit conducted its own investigation and removed roughly 143 accounts it linked to the same network.
The accounts had worked to inject Iran-aligned articles and narratives into political discussion on Reddit, including in large communities oriented around world news and politics. Reddit's enforcement followed a familiar pattern for the platform during this period: coordinated inauthentic behavior surfaced first through outside researchers or platform peers, after which Reddit traced the activity within its own systems and purged the accounts involved. Notably, contemporaneous reporting indicated that Reddit moderators had flagged the suspicious link-spamming behavior associated with the network well before the broader takedowns, underscoring the role volunteer moderators sometimes played as an early-warning system.
The episode formed part of the wider reckoning, beginning in 2017 and accelerating through 2018, over state-backed information operations on social media. While much public attention focused on Russian activity, the Iran-linked network demonstrated that multiple state actors were exploiting open platforms, and that Reddit's pseudonymous, community-driven model was an attractive target for narrative-laundering precisely because authentic-seeming participation could be difficult to distinguish from manipulation.
Observers noted that the Iranian operation, like several others, achieved limited authentic engagement on Reddit; the platform's community voting and moderation dynamics tended to blunt the reach of low-quality or off-key propaganda. Even so, the discovery and removal of the accounts mattered as evidence that foreign influence efforts were actively targeting the site, and it contributed to Reddit's evolving disclosures about coordinated inauthentic behavior.
The action is distinct from later, larger influence-operation takedowns and from Reddit's interactions with the Iranian state over network blocking; here, Iran was the originating actor of a covert operation rather than the censoring authority, and the names and reporting around 'Liberty Front Press' specifically tie the removed accounts to that network.
