Rogozinski v. Reddit, Inc.

Jaime Rogozinski, who created the r/WallStreetBets subreddit in 2012 and coined the WallStreetBets term, sued Reddit for trademark infringement and dilution plus state-law claims after Reddit removed him as a moderator and asserted its own rights in the mark. Judge Maxine M. Chesney of the Northern District of California dismissed the claims, holding that ownership of a trademark requires being first to use the mark in the sale of goods or services, and that Reddit, not Rogozinski, provided the services enabling the subreddit. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the dismissal by memorandum opinion on June 11, 2025, agreeing Rogozinski could not plead valid ownership.
