AwkwardTheTurtle is the Reddit handle of a prominent 'power moderator' who, at the height of activity around 2021, helped moderate roughly a thousand subreddits, including several with millions of subscribers; no real name has been published in reputable sources. In August 2021 the account became the focus of a large cross-subreddit campaign in which users accused the moderator of arbitrary bans, hostile conduct, and alleged paid moderation that would breach Reddit's rules. The backlash included a petition that gathered close to fourteen thousand signatures and a dedicated opposition subreddit. The moderator denied the accusations, said they moderated without payment, and reported receiving severe harassment and death threats. The handle is also frequently cited in the broader controversy over a small number of moderators controlling a large share of Reddit's most popular communities, a concentration of volunteer power that has repeatedly drawn user objections and questions about accountability on the platform.
