Chad Birch (Deimorz)

Chad Birch, known on Reddit by the username Deimorz, is the developer who created AutoModerator, the automated moderation tool that became foundational infrastructure for content governance across the platform. At the time, Birch was a volunteer moderator of r/gaming, then the largest video-gaming community on the site, and he built the tool to address the practical burden of moderating a fast-growing subreddit by hand.

Birch announced AutoModerator on January 19, 2012. The bot operated as an ordinary user account that used Reddit's public API to scan new submissions and comments and automatically take moderation actions based on configurable rules — filtering or removing content by keyword, domain, account age, and other criteria. The tool was quickly and widely adopted by moderators across the site, who valued its ability to enforce rules at a scale impossible for human teams alone.

In 2013 Reddit hired Birch as an employee. A key development under his tenure was a shift to per-subreddit configuration through editable wiki pages, allowing each community's moderators to define and adjust their own rules without Birch having to set up the bot manually for them. This made the tool dramatically more scalable and accessible. In March 2015, Reddit officially integrated AutoModerator as a native, platform-wide feature available to all subreddits, cementing it as core moderation infrastructure rather than a volunteer side project. Its model later influenced automated moderation on other major platforms such as Twitch and Discord.

Birch left Reddit around 2016. AutoModerator has continued to operate and remains central to how the site is governed, handling a volume of routine moderation actions far beyond what human moderators could manage. Because of its scale and influence, the tool has become a significant subject of academic study, with researchers examining its role in human-machine collaboration and the way it shapes platform governance through automated visibility and enforcement. AutoModerator is frequently cited as an early and influential example of algorithmic content regulation built by, and for, a volunteer community.
