Biography
Chenhao Tan is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Chicago, where he leads the Chicago Human+AI Lab studying how people and machine-learning systems interact and how language persuades. He is the lead author of 'Winning Arguments: Interaction Dynamics and Persuasion Strategies in Good-faith Online Discussions,' a 2016 study that mined Reddit's r/changemyview community to identify the interaction patterns and linguistic features that predict when a counterargument successfully changes someone's mind, using the subreddit's 'delta' mechanism as a signal of persuasion. The study and the ChangeMyView corpus it produced became a standard benchmark in computational research on argumentation and persuasion and were covered in mainstream outlets. His broader work on natural-language processing, explanation, and human-AI collaboration frequently uses large-scale discussion data, with the r/changemyview study among his most widely cited contributions.
