Biography
Chris Hadfield is a Canadian astronaut, engineer, and former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot who became widely known for his public outreach about spaceflight. On February 17, 2013, while aboard the International Space Station, he conducted a Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' session that became one of the most celebrated examples of the format. He went on to become the first Canadian to command the ISS as the station transitioned to Expedition 35.
The AMA was notable both for its content and for the logistics behind it. Hadfield answered questions from orbit using a laptop, with his responses relayed via satellite to a ground server before being posted to Reddit. The session drew thousands of questions and comments, and his thoughtful, vivid answers, including a description of watching a meteorite burn up in the atmosphere below him, captured wide attention.
Coverage from outlets such as The Next Web, HuffPost, and The Mary Sue praised the AMA as exceptionally engaging, with some commentators ranking it among the best the platform had hosted, favorably compared to high-profile sessions by other public figures. It reinforced Hadfield's growing reputation as a uniquely effective communicator of the experience of living and working in space.
The AMA was part of a broader, highly successful outreach effort during his time on the station, which included widely shared photographs, educational videos, and a recording of music performed in orbit. Together these efforts helped renew public interest in human spaceflight and made Hadfield one of the most recognizable astronauts of his generation. His Reddit session remains a frequently cited positive example of how the AMA format can foster genuine, memorable interaction between an expert and a large online audience.
