Christopher Slowe

Christopher Brian Slowe, known online by the username 'KeyserSosa' (a slight misspelling of the antagonist in the film The Usual Suspects), is an American engineer and one of Reddit's earliest figures. Before entering the technology industry, he trained as an experimental physicist and earned a PhD in physics from Harvard University. He joined Reddit during its Y Combinator period in 2005 and is widely described as the company's first employee, sometimes also counted among its co-founders.

In Reddit's early years Slowe built core parts of the platform's infrastructure, including elements of its content-ranking and anti-spam systems, working alongside Steve Huffman, Alexis Ohanian, and Aaron Swartz. He was the longest-serving member of the original team, remaining until around 2010, when he departed to join Huffman's travel startup Hipmunk, where he served as chief scientist.

Slowe returned to Reddit in 2017 and became its chief technology officer, a role in which he oversaw the scaling of the company's engineering organization during a period of rapid user growth and infrastructure expansion. He is also recognized within the company as a senior technical fellow.

Unlike several of his Reddit peers, Slowe is not primarily associated with public controversy; his significance lies in his long technical stewardship of the platform. He led Reddit's engineering through the lead-up to and aftermath of the company's March 2024 initial public offering, which transformed Reddit into a publicly traded company. His career, spanning from Reddit's first office through its IPO, is frequently cited as an example of unusually long tenure among the founding generation of a major internet company.
