Biography
Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil is an associate professor of information science at Cornell University whose research applies computational methods to the study of human conversation and online communities. He is a co-author of 'Winning Arguments,' the 2016 study that analysed Reddit's r/changemyview to determine which linguistic and interactional features make arguments persuasive, and his group maintains the widely used ChangeMyView conversational corpus as part of Cornell's ConvoKit toolkit, comprising thousands of conversations drawn from the subreddit. His broader scholarship examines conversational dynamics such as politeness, social influence, and how the language of online communities evolves, often using large public discussion datasets. The r/changemyview work is among the most cited studies bridging natural-language processing and computational social science, and it has made the subreddit a standard testbed for research on persuasion and good-faith disagreement online.
