Biography
Donald Edward Newhouse (August 5, 1929 – May 26, 2026) was an American media businessman who, with his brother Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr., owned Advance Publications, the privately held company their father founded. Advance grew from a chain of newspapers into a diversified media holding company whose assets include Condé Nast, numerous local news operations, and significant stakes in cable and entertainment companies.
Newhouse's relevance to Reddit lies in ownership. Advance Publications, through its Condé Nast subsidiary, acquired Reddit in 2006, roughly a year after the site emerged from Y Combinator with a handful of employees. Even after Reddit was spun out as an independent company in 2011, Advance retained the largest ownership position, and that stake appreciated dramatically as Reddit's valuation grew over the following years.
For much of his career, Newhouse focused on the newspaper side of Advance while his brother oversaw the magazines. The family's businesses were known for being privately held and operated with limited public disclosure, which kept the precise terms of holdings such as the Reddit stake largely out of view until Reddit's 2024 initial public offering brought new transparency to the company's ownership.
Reporting in 2024 described the Newhouse family's Reddit position as a substantial windfall, with coverage noting the steep appreciation of the stake relative to the original acquisition price and framing it as a bright spot amid broader pressures on legacy media revenues. Donald Newhouse, consistently ranked among the wealthiest people in the United States, died in May 2026. His role with respect to Reddit is best understood as that of a long-term owner through Advance rather than as an operational or board-level participant in the company.
