Robert Allam, known on Reddit by the username GallowBoob, was for years one of the platform's most prominent and recognizable users. A former landscape architect, he accumulated tens of millions of karma and moderated dozens of subreddits, including large communities such as r/oddlysatisfying and r/tifu. His prolific posting earned him media nicknames such as the 'King of Karma' and led to professional opportunities in social media, but it also made him a frequent target of criticism within Reddit's communities.
Much of that criticism centered on allegations of karma-farming through tactical reposting and on questions about commercial influence. In February 2019, Allam posted a new Netflix logo animation to r/oddlysatisfying shortly after its release. The timing led some users to accuse him of being paid to promote the content, prompting discussion in communities such as r/HailCorporate. Allam disputed the accusations that he had been paid to advertise, and the episode became a recurring example in debates over corporate influence and authenticity on the site.
In March 2020, a broader viral discussion drew attention to how a relatively small group of moderators controlled a large share of Reddit's most popular subreddits, with Allam emerging as one of the most visible focal points. The conversation, while raising legitimate questions about moderation and platform power, also spilled into targeted harassment directed at him personally.
Allam has said he received death threats and experienced hacking attempts, some referencing his employer and home, and that the harassment took a serious toll. He subsequently stepped back from his heavy involvement on the platform. In an interview, he spoke about the drama, the harassment, and his views on improving online communities.
