Biography
Ian Miles Cheong is a Malaysian-born writer and online commentator who, in the period around 2008 to 2012, was one of Reddit's most prominent moderators under the handle SolInvictus. He held moderator positions across several of Reddit's largest communities, including r/AskReddit, r/politics, r/WTF, and r/todayilearned, each with millions of subscribers. In 2012 his account was banned from Reddit after he repeatedly submitted and promoted links to outlets with which he had professional or paid relationships, without disclosing those ties; one outlet told the Daily Dot it had engaged him as a paid social-media consultant. Because his standing as a top moderator allowed his submissions to bypass Reddit's spam filtering, the undisclosed promotion drew significant attention as an early case of conflicts of interest among powerful volunteer moderators. He had also worked as a news editor at a video-game outlet, and in later years became known chiefly as a political commentator on other platforms.
