Biography
Jaime Rogozinski is the founder of r/wallstreetbets, the Reddit community that became central to the 2021 GameStop trading frenzy. He created the subreddit on January 31, 2012 as a forum for high-risk, speculative trading discussion. Over the following years the community grew into one of Reddit's most influential financial spaces, developing a distinctive irreverent culture that later drew mainstream attention when it was tied to the dramatic price moves in GameStop and other 'meme stocks.'
In April 2020, Reddit administrators removed Rogozinski as a moderator of the community he had founded. Reddit said the removal stemmed from his attempt to commercially exploit the community, specifically an effort to trademark the 'WallStreetBets' name, which it framed as a policy violation. Rogozinski has disputed Reddit's characterization of events, and the dispute over who controlled and owned the community's identity set the stage for later litigation.
In February 2023 Rogozinski sued Reddit, bringing claims including breach of contract and trademark infringement and asserting that he owned the 'WallStreetBets' mark because he had coined it and used it on Reddit. The case was dismissed by the district court. On June 11, 2025, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed the dismissal with prejudice, holding that Rogozinski could not establish trademark ownership. The court reasoned that inventing a mark or being first to attempt to register it is not enough; ownership requires being first to actually use the mark 'in the sale of goods or services,' and it found that Reddit, not Rogozinski, had done so.
The ruling drew commentary from legal observers as a significant decision on who owns brand identities built within online platforms by their users. Rogozinski continued to contest the outcome, filing a petition for a writ of certiorari with the US Supreme Court on November 7, 2025; Reddit waived its right to respond, a procedural step that can speed the Court's decision on whether to hear the case. Regardless of the litigation's final outcome, the community he founded remains one of the most consequential in Reddit's history, having been at the heart of an event that reshaped public conversation about retail investing.
