Biography
Jeremy Blackburn is an associate professor of computer science at Binghamton University and a co-founder of the iDRAMA Lab, which conducts large-scale measurement and analysis of socio-technical problems online such as harassment campaigns and hate speech. His research centres on the empirical study of bad actors across social platforms. He is a listed co-author of 'The Pushshift Reddit Dataset' (ICWSM 2020), the widely used dataset paper that opened large-scale Reddit data to researchers. He also co-authored 'Understanding the Effect of Deplatforming on Social Networks,' which traced how users suspended from Reddit migrated to alternative platforms such as Gab, reporting that a large majority of suspended users created accounts on the alternative site after their final Reddit activity, with signs of increased activity and toxicity. His work is frequently cited in debates over whether deplatforming reduces or merely relocates online harm.
