Laurel Beeler
Magistrate judge who quashed film studios' subpoenas to unmask Reddit users
U.S. District Court, Northern District of California
Biography
Laurel Beeler is a United States magistrate judge in the Northern District of California. In 2023 she issued rulings in proceedings captioned In re Subpoena to Reddit, in which film companies pursuing copyright-infringement cases against internet service providers sought to compel Reddit to identify anonymous users who had written comments in piracy-related discussion threads. Beeler quashed the subpoenas, holding that the First Amendment protects the right to speak anonymously online and that the studios had not shown a compelling need for the users' identities that outweighed those rights, particularly where the comments were of limited relevance and the information could be obtained elsewhere. The decisions were widely reported as a significant affirmation of online anonymity protections, and they are frequently cited in discussions of when courts will, or will not, force platforms such as Reddit to unmask their users.
