Biography
Lorenzo Cima is a doctoral researcher in information engineering at the University of Pisa, affiliated with the cyber-intelligence group at Italy's IIT-CNR in Pisa, where he has worked since late 2022. His research focuses on social-media content moderation, coordinated inauthentic information operations, and the biases, persuasive capabilities, and security of large language models. He is the lead author of 'The Great Ban,' a 2024 study that evaluated Reddit's 2020 deplatforming of nearly two thousand toxic communities by analysing millions of comments to measure changes in user toxicity, activity, and whether banned users left the platform, and he served as data manager for the study's accompanying dataset. The paper has become a frequently cited entry in the literature on whether mass community bans achieve their stated aims. Cima has received early-career recognition for his work and completed a visiting research stay abroad during his doctorate.
