Biography
Manoel Horta Ribeiro is a computational social scientist who studies online radicalization, content moderation, and sociotechnical systems. He earned his doctorate at EPFL's Data Science Lab and joined Princeton University as an assistant professor of computer science, affiliated with the Center for Information Technology Policy. His widely cited Reddit research includes a large-scale characterisation of the 'manosphere' across dozens of subreddits and forums; a study of how the bans of r/The_Donald and r/Incels affected content moderation after those communities migrated to standalone websites; and analyses of whether anti-feminist online communities act as gateways toward more extreme spaces. He also co-authored 'Auditing Radicalization Pathways on YouTube.' His platform-migration work is frequently referenced in debates over whether deplatforming controversial Reddit communities reduces harm overall or simply displaces it to less-moderated venues where it can intensify.
