Marc Andreessen

Marc Andreessen is an American software engineer, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist who co-created the Mosaic web browser and co-founded Netscape Communications in 1994. Netscape's 1995 initial public offering is widely seen as the launch of the commercial internet era, and AOL acquired the company in 1999 for roughly $4.2 billion. Between 2005 and 2009, Andreessen and his partner Ben Horowitz became prominent angel investors, backing dozens of startups before formally founding the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in 2009 with an initial $300 million fund.

Andreessen is counted among Reddit's prominent investors through his firm a16z, which participated in Reddit's funding rounds. In Reddit's September 2014 Series B round, the company raised $50 million at a roughly $500 million valuation in a deal led by then-Y Combinator president Sam Altman, with Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital among the participating firms. The round was notable for an unusual stipulation that investors give 10% of their stake to the Reddit community. a16z also remained connected to Reddit through subsequent rounds, including the company's large 2019 financing.

Andreessen's involvement reflects the deep venture-capital ties that supported Reddit's growth from a small Y Combinator-backed startup into a major platform. Reddit ultimately went public on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2024, pricing its IPO at $34 per share and surging on its debut, which delivered returns to the early investors who had backed the company over the preceding decade. Andreessen is frequently grouped with other high-profile Reddit backers, and coverage of the company's investor base has linked him alongside figures such as Peter Thiel and entertainers like Snoop Dogg who participated in its financing.
